Lesotho Wales Health Links

Health Links have between Lesotho and Wales have been evolving over the last 18 years. 

Secondments of health personnel from Wales have been numerous and Dolen Cymru also arranges elective placement for medical students from Wales at hospitals in Lesotho. To enquire about elective placements please contact us.

There has been reciprocal training for Lesotho health staff in Wales.

Dolen Cymru would like to establish a long-term programme in the field of health with the Ministry of Health in Lesotho.

A proposal has been made to the Ministry of Health for a project on Management and Prevention of HIV/AIDS in the Quthing District of Lesotho. This proposal was developed in partnership with the Lesotho Red Cross and will draw on expertise in Wales through hospital twinning. The Ministry has agreed to the project and we are currently exploring various funding opportunities.

Bernie in Lesotho

Bernadette O'Hare is a consultant paediatrician in the Department of Paediatrics, University Hospital of Wales. She is currently in Lesotho working for the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare until the end of August 2008. She is located in the Department of paediatrics at QEII in Maseru.

Skills matching programme

Urgent needs in human resources are highlighted by colleagues in Lesotho and advertised by Dolen Cymru in Wales.
So far this programme has resulted in one NHS member of staff working as a doctor in Lesotho for 8 months beginning in January 2008
